Books for Visiting Parks

There are many books on National Parks, but these are a few we've found to be the most helpful

bookguidetothenationalparks.jpg (9582 bytes) National Geographic Guide to the National Parks of the United States. This is our #1 "can't live without" resource! This book has about 8 pages for each of the 50+ Parks.  It includes maps, beautiful photos and history, but the most useful are the detailed descriptions of what to do in the Park. These "how to visit" sections contain great info on what trails to take, what overlooks to stop at and how long it will take you. We've learned through experience to trust their recommendations and take this book with us to every Park. To order, you can call National Geographic direct at 1-888-225-5647.
bookcompleteguide.jpg (9295 bytes) The Complete Guide to America's National Parks. This book, sponsored by the National Park Foundation, is a wealth of practical information on all the National Parks AND most National Monuments, Memorials and Historical Parks. It lacks pictures, but information includes things to do, camping facilities, lodging locations, entrance fees, visitor center hours (very useful), climate info and telephone numbers (also very useful). The book is published by Fodor's, ISBN 0-679-00769-5.
booknationalparkphotography.jpg (18811 bytes) National Park Photography by Tim Fitzharris. This book, published by AAA, is not only full of breathtaking photographs, but the author takes you through 21 of his favorite parks and highlights his favorite spots for photography. It is full of tips on when to visit and what to look for to get great photographs. The photography tips and techniques are great for novices and experts alike. AAA Publishing, ISBN 1-56251-549-7.

Books for National Park History

bookournationalparks.jpg (11709 bytes) LIFE's Our National Parks, Celebrating America's Natural Splendor. This book has outstanding, full-page photography of every Park, and provides a good history of our National Parks as a whole, if not individually. It walks through factors leading to the creation of our Park system and the individuals who made it possible. The book can be ordered directly from LIFE at 1-800-327-6388.
